Light green eyes were reflected in the gently flowing brook. Almond shaped, and tinged with blue, the extraordinary pools gazed softly into the clear flowing depths. Birchstar's neat angular face stared back at her, the sun shining brightly behind her also reflected in the water. She wasn't depressed, merely thoughtful, coming to think after a long day of hunting and strolling about through her territory.
Birchstar blinked, and spotted a small daisy growing out of the land bridge that she was sitting on. The bridge was over grown, but she liked it that way. The she cat was very calm today, at her most peaceful mood. She didn't seem to mind that there wasn't so much to do.

--Emeraldfire-- A dark shape was hidden in the horsetail, fiery emerald eyes gazing at the leader. He dared not approach her-even though he had become deputy, he was still very shy with she-cats--and for a good reason. His eyes narrowed. His leader really was beautiful. Even her watery, shimmering reflection was attractive.
He sighed. Birchstar's gaze drifted over to a daisy. A pretty one, standing out on the overgrown land bridge.
Finally, Emeraldfire got up his nerve. He padded over to the land bridge and picked his way nimbly through the sharp weeds.
Hello, Birchstar. How are you today?

Birchstar raised her angular head at the sound of her deputy's voice, but didn't reply immediately, continuing to gaze broodingly into the brook in front of her. At last, lifting her head slightly taller, but still facing the water, she spoke. Hello, Emeraldfire. What brings you here today?

He blinked. Well, I, er...We found an old badger set on the border with PastureClan. His gaze followed hers--directly into the shimmering water. The badger scent is a bit stale, but you can tell that it's been in the den after last night. He blinked his green optics again. It was a habit of his--rather annoying sometimes.

Birchstar shrugged. If the scent is stale, there's probably not much to worry about. She meowed in her strangely gentle voice. Just keep a look out for it. It's probably crossed into PastureClan by now though. We don't need to concern ourselves with it right at the moment. There are more important things that need to be taken care of. Emeraldfire, leaf bare will be coming on, and although it seems early, we should begin making preparations for the cold seasons as soon as possible. I like to be well prepared.

Emeralfire nodded in silent agreement. Though all we lost last leaf-bare was an elder and a newborn, right? If we repeat that process that we used last year, we could probably pull through fine.

I would rather not lose anyone. At the last gathering, Larkwing had said that he had seen many winters, where all cats survived. Maybe we can pull through.

Yes. That's true, he mewed thoughtfully. We should start stocking even today. I'll tell the apprentices to make place in our usual place. It's overgrown, he added uselessly. Every leaf-bare, cats started the prey stock in a special spot near the elders' den. Half hole, half den, the place kept prey from rotting for some reason--it stayed almost fresh all leaf-bare. Every Clan had a special spot like that. The cats believed that DreamClan had put it there on purpose for them to live through hard times.

Birchstar nodded. Definitely. Good to be prepared early. You're a good deputy, Emeraldfire. I chose well.

Emeraldfire bowed his head. And Flamestar chose well when he chose you. I was just an apprentice, but I remember it clear as last moon...

Birchstar nodded reminiciently. Ahh yes...Flamestar was a great leader. One of the best this clan has ever seen. I was a young ambitiously quiet warrior. Birchleaf, that was my name...And then I was chosen to be deputy. It took a while for the impact to sink in.

Emeraldfire chuckled. Just what happened to me. I didn't speak for almost a whole day! His mroww of laughter echoed through the trees, and he grew serious again. I wish Flamestar hadn't died...

Birchstar smiled sereenly. You will become used to it in time. she meowed cheerfully. Yes. BrookClan grieved much at Flamestar's death bed. But he was an old cat, and he died very peacefully in his sleep.
